In NFV and cloud use scenarios, the ideal network I/O interface should meet the requirements of high throughput and cloudification simultaneously. Facing the same host interface, application obtains the high performance when the host interface is supported by hardware native NIC, and it could live-migrate or hot-upgrade when the host interface is switched to get supported from emulated NIC in DPDK. Emulated NIC in DPDK which essentially provides the software equipment of hardware NIC can cooperate with hardware NIC seamlessly to provide the same host interface for application to consume. VFIO-over-Socket, also known as vfio-user, is a protocol that allows a device to be virtualized in separate process outside QEMU. DPDK will have vfio-user support by introducing and implementing vfio-user bus driver. That provides the framework for DPDK application to offer device virtualization and accommodates QEMU out-of-tree emulated devices in DPDK. Emulated NIC lives with vfio-user based device virtualization framework. This presentation will cover below items: 1. What the ideal network IO virtualization solution looks like 2. How emulated NIC works with hardware NIC to provide the ideal network IO virtualization solution 3. Introducing framework for accommodating emulated device and emulated NIC in DPDK
